EFFICIENT FEED PRODUCTION

PRODUCTION AT OUR AQUAFEED SUPPLIER’S FACILITY (NEXTRUSION) IS FLEXIBLE, SOPHISTICATED AND EFFICIENT.

 HIGH EFFICIENCY EQUIPMENT AND SOFTWARE

The amount of water used is minimal and the state-of-the-art operation consumes about 10% less energy than other designs. This low consumption is due to ultra-high efficiency equipment and software. Examples include direct-drive extruders, infrared-monitored natural gas dryers, and smart operating software that “learns” and becomes more efficient over time.

Design flexibility also allows for the use of a wide range of next-generation ingredients. One example is algal oil which is used to replace fish oil traditionally used in aqua feed diets. A substitution like this takes pressure off marine forage fish stocks which helps preserve our ocean’s ecosystems.

MINIMIZING THE CARBON FOOTPRINT

THE DYNEAQUACULTURE MODEL MINIMIZES OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT.  THIS STARTS WITH FEED PRODUCTION.

 SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES 

It is a far more sustainable practice to produce feed near the supply of ingredients than to ship all the ingredients to a feed manufacturing facility built next to an aquaculture facility. Nextrusion is ideally located in Hartford, SD at the epicenter of feed ingredients and near major transportation arteries. This minimizes diesel fuel consumption for both inbound ingredient loads and outbound product deliveries. An additional efficiency is that the largest algal oil supplier in North American is located only 200 miles away in Blair, NE.

The DyneAqua salmon producing facilities will be strategically placed near local markets. This local proximity maximizes freshness and consumer appeal and minimizes the carbon footprint. This is accomplished by building the DyneAqua facilities within the core transportation network of our distribution partner for transport to nearby population centers.

 PROGRESSIVE STEPS TO REDUCE CARBON EMISSIONS

Airfreight can be a significant contributor to carbon emissions. More than 70% of the salmon fillets entering the US are airfreighted from Chile. Similarly, Norway, the largest producer of Atlantic salmon globally, ships all of their US-bound salmon via airfreight. Producing salmon locally, near US population centers, is a significantly more sustainable practice and a progressive step towards the reduction of carbon emissions.

EFFICIENT PROTEIN PRODUCTION

AQUACULTURE IS A CORE SOLUTION FOR FEEDING THE TWO BILLION ADDITIONAL PEOPLE PROJECTED BY 2050.

Salmon is the most efficient animal protein requiring only 1.1 lb. of feed to add one pound of body weight.

FISH ARE EFFICIENT CONVERTERS OF FEED

Fish are by far the most efficient converters of feed into animal protein. The DyneAqua RAS systems designed for Atlantic salmon represent the pinnacle of protein production efficiency and environmental sustainability. It begins with the Atlantic salmon which is an amazing creature. Salmon is a highly evolved cold water species and an extraordinary converter of food. Only 1.1 lb. of aqua feed is required to add one pound of body weight. This is possible because:

  • Atlantic salmon are cold-blooded and expend no energy for warmth.

  • Unlike livestock with legs, they are buoyant in their environment and expend no energy standing.

This efficiency conserves feed ingredients and the resources required to grow and transport them (energy, fertilizer, water, diesel fuel, etc.).

EFFICIENT WASTE UTILIZATION IS ANOTHER FEATURE OF OUR SUSTAINABILITY MODEL.

AQUA PARTNER VEOLIA IS THE GLOBAL LEADER IN WASTEWATER  TREATMENT.

In the system DyneAqua will use the fish waste that is collected, de-watered and then either robotically composted or packaged and sold as fertilizer.  This is in sharp contrast to the waste generated from salmon raised in ocean pens. In those systems, the fish waste remains in the ocean water and disturbs the ocean’s ecosystem.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES BEYOND CLEAN WATER

Unlike ocean pens, Veolia’s system is contained, making it impossible for salmon to escape. Not only can diseases spread to native populations, but a type of genocide also occurs when these fish breed with native Atlantic salmon and their offspring cannot survive in the wild.
